Betel leaf has been taken as an infusion in Tamil households for generations, usually by tearing a fresh leaf into hot water. This is the same thing, made convenient. Each bag holds two grams of pure Sholavandan betel leaf β no blending agents, no added flavouring, no colour, and no caffeine.
The taste is worth setting expectations on. It is not sweet and it is not floral. It is clean and faintly peppery with a cooling finish, closer to a light green tea than to a herbal fruit infusion. Most people take it without milk. A little honey suits it well if you prefer something softer.
Because it is caffeine free, it works as an evening drink where regular tea would not. It is the easiest way into betel leaf for anyone who has not grown up with the fresh leaf.
Grown, harvested and packed by our own family in Sholavandan, Madurai district.
What sets it apart
Suitable for evenings and for anyone reducing caffeine.
Pure betel leaf β no blending agents, colours or added flavouring.
No preparation, no straining, no measuring.
The customary time to drink it across South India.
Preparation
Place one tea bag in a cup and add 150 ml of hot water, just off the boil.
Steep for three to five minutes depending on how strong you like it.
Remove the bag and drink. Best without milk.
Add honey or a slice of lemon if you prefer a softer flavour.
Store the box in a cool, dry place away from strong-smelling foods β tea bags absorb surrounding aromas. Keep the inner wrapper closed once opened.
