Betel leaf oil is produced by steam distillation, which passes steam through the leaf material and captures the volatile compounds as the vapour condenses. It is a slow process with a very low yield β it takes a large volume of fresh leaf to produce a small quantity of oil, which is why genuine betel leaf oil is not cheap.
The alternative is solvent extraction, which is faster and produces more, but leaves residue and changes the character of the oil. We use steam distillation only. The result is a clear, pale oil with a sharp, green, peppery aroma that is unmistakably betel.
This is a concentrated essential oil and should be treated as one. It is intended for aromatherapy and traditional external use, always diluted in a carrier oil. It is not for internal consumption.
Grown, harvested and packed by our own family in Sholavandan, Madurai district.
What sets it apart
No solvents, no chemical extraction, no residue.
Distilled from our own GI-certified Sholavandan leaves.
Long used in South Indian household practice, always diluted.
A sharp, green, peppery note used in diffuser blends.
Preparation
Always dilute before use β two to three drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil such as coconut or sesame.
For aromatherapy, add three to four drops to a diffuser.
Patch-test on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours before wider use.
For external use only. Do not swallow.
Keep the bottle tightly capped in a cool, dark place. Essential oils degrade in light and heat, so keep it out of direct sunlight and away from the stove. The amber glass is part of the protection.
